House Energy Ratings

Cladding and Insulation

Homes account for about 10% of Australia’s total carbon emissions.  Since May 2011, all new homes or renovations in Australia must meet a minimum six-star or equivalent energy rating (depending on your state or territory).

If your building a new home through owner builder or a builder, doing home renovations, alterations and additions then you need to comply with the 6 star energy efficiency rating.

Good design at the planning stages makes it easy to meet the 6 star compliance while also improving the value of your home.

Because 38% of home energy use comes from heating and cooling 6 Star energy efficiency rating applies to your home’s building envelope – its roof, walls, floor and windows.

This is where your choice of insulation is crucial.  As an example a well-insulated roof can save you up to 45% on heating and cooling. A further 20% can be saved with wall insulation.

Insulation

Good insulation can drastically reduce the cost of energy bills.  All insulation materials are rated for their performance in thermal resistance. This rating is expressed as an R-value.  The higher the R-value the greater the insulating effect.

Roof and ceiling insulation should have an R-Value of 5.1.

Wall insulation an R-Value of 2.8.

Stocked by ICR Concrete Supplies, NRG GreenboardInsulated wall cladding NRG Greenboard™ achieves the 6 star energy ratings with cladding insulation options from 1.92 R to 3.96 R.

NRG Greenboard™ is external cladding for timber or steel framed buildings as well as solid concrete and masonry walls.
